Updates on 2013 Annual Service Awards

The IRRI community is invited to witness the awarding and recognition of 144 employees on 19 December 2013 in celebration of the Gems of IRRI: Annual Service Awards and Recognition Program at headquarters.

A total of 117 recipients will be awarded and recognized for their dedicated service in the Institute, 1 team, consisting of 10 members, for the Mid-year Semi-Annual Team Awards, and 17 winners of Manager’s Discretionary Awards.

Manager's Discretionary Awards in December

In recognition of their extraordinary work, Ma. Aileen Garcia (PR), Rolando Guevarra (ES), Sulpicio Malabanan (ES), Nazario Timbol (ES), Norman Oliva (PBGB), and Hershey Aquino (HRS) received the IRRI Manager’s Discretionary Awards in December.

The winners were chosen after a nomination process which began at Organizational Unit (OU) level and which included a review and assessment by the relevant Deputy Director General.

A total of 17 MDA recipients have been awarded since the program was first launched in June 2013.

IRRI continues to receive MDA nominations and enables managers (NRS Job Levels 7 to 8, PDF and IRS) to recognize single instances of extraordinary work performed by IRRI Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) in headquarters and country offices. HQ Human Resource Services visits IRRI Myanmar Office

From 9 to 14 December two representatives of HRS, Bing Andarin (HR Business Partner) and Sara van Gaalen (HR Specialist) met with all Nationally Recruited Staff based in Myanmar. The objective of the trip was to finalize the Compensation and Benefits (C&B) brochure for NRS in Myanmar and to introduce the standard job profile and NRS Career Path to all staff.

HRS visited several international NGOs to conduct compensation and benefit benchmarking exercise. The outcomes of the meetings were discussed with the IRRI Representative, Madonna Casimero. The outcomes of the meetings will be published in a brochure, which will be available on the HR Services Portal early next year.

Bing and Sara also met staff members to explain the purpose of the standard job profiles, discuss the job profiles individually and to consult on the NRS Career Path guidelines. At the end of the week staff members also had the opportunity to ask any questions related to Human Resources.

In the coming year, more HRS HQ staff will visit Myanmar, for example to roll out the OCS and the Code of Conduct and to implement staff wellness activities. IRRI to hold the Annual Service Awards Ceremony


The  Annual Service Awards Ceremony,  themed "Gems of IRRI" will be held on 19 December 2013 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Havener Auditorium, Chandler Hall in headquarters.

The ceremony will honor all staff who worked and served the Institute  for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service,  and will also include a recognition program for the winners of the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA) and Mid-year Semi-Annual Team Awards (SATA). Special guest performances and inspiring speeches from the selected award recipients are only some of the highlights of the program.

Right after the program proper, an afternoon treat will be held to celebrate the occasion with all the awardees, their respective supervisors, and the relevant deputy director general.

New Employee Association Working Committee to hold a workshop

After a series of consultation sessions from the Institute’s recognized sector organizations and some members of the management, the working committee will hold its 2-day workshop on 11-12 December 2013 in headquarters. The workshop will allow the members of the working committee to consolidate the results of the consultation sessions including developing the framework of the new employee association model, and its vision and mission. The draft model is set to be presented by the working committee for discussion with the Human Resource Services Director on 20 December 2013.

Play held by Brent IRRI students


A total of 250 guests including staff, IRRI spouses, and the children from the feeding centers joined to witness the play themed ‘A Super Christmas’ on 3 December 2013 at headquarters.

The Brent IRRI school students performed  the famous characters in the Christmas story  and serenaded the guests with special Christmas song numbers and gift giving activity.

SUHAY is a group of international spouses at IRRI. Every year, they help the pre-school feeding centers in Los Banos for malnourished children and conducts various support activities for the Los Banos community.

Dance for a cause held for typhoon Yolanda victims


A very special evening of dance was held on 29 November 2013 at headquarters to raise funds for the Typhoon Yolanda victims. The event, titled ‘Zumba Party’ was organized by IRRI Zumba enthusiasts in partnership with the HRS -Workplace Relations and Advisory Services and members of the sector organizations–Association of IRRI Secretaries and Administrative Staff (AISAS), IRRI Filipino Scientists Association (IFSA) and Society of IRRI Non-research Professionals (SINOP).

A total of 50 participants joined the activity.

The event raised Php 15,000. All the proceeds will be forwarded to Philippine National Red Cross through Partnerships Office - Philippines Desk.

Staff survey resulted to cancellation of Institute year-end party

In reference to DG Memo 2013-19, a staff survey resulted in an overwhelming desire to cancel the Institute year-end party, and instead use the funds to benefit the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. IRRI will immediately forward the funds to Catholic Relief Services, who have teams on the ground in the most heavily affected areas to assist those in need.

Through the same staff survey, a number of NRS also expressed a wish to donate the cash value of their personal December rice ration. HRS - Compensation & Benefits Services will open an online registration (click here) to accommodate this request. IRRI will ensure that these donations also reach Catholic Relief Services.

Media skills training held for senior professionals



IRRI holds Media Skills Training (MST) for staff on 27-29 November 2013 at headquarters.

The workshop aims to help the participants to take control of the media “transaction” through intense preparations and delivery techniques. It also enables participants to devise a robust strategic position that can be delivered in any media situation; perform in a more confident and comfortable way in front of reporters, microphones and cameras; and, recognize how their voice and body language can help or hinder a media performance.

IRRI recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation during the World Food Day in Myanmar


Dr. Madonna Casimero, IRRI Representative to Myanmar received a plaque of appreciation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) in honor of IRRI's strong technical support to rice sector development last 16 October 2013. This is in line with the World Food Day Celebration in the new administrative capital of Myanmar, Nay Pyi Taw.

"Sustainable Food System for Food Security and Nutrition" is this year's World Food Day theme that emphasized on R.I.C.Hstrategy. As identified by Dr. Robert Zeigler, IRRI Director General, the strategy will address the three principal areas for improvement for farmers to achieve higher profitability and for them to continue growing rice: (1) technological innovation, adaptation and extension; (2) postharvest processing and marketing; (3) development of international trade.

IRRI to hold annual service awards in December

In honor of 117 employees for the enduring commitment to the Institute's mission, IRRI will hold the “The Gems of IRRI 2013” Service Awards at headquarters in December.

Highlighting the annual event will be the awarding of twenty-five (25) 10-year awardees, sixteen (16) 15-year awardees, thirteen (13) 20-year awardees, nine (9) 25-year awardees, twenty-two (22) 30-year awardees, thirty-two (32) 35-year awardees, and one (1) 40-year awardee.

Management Services workshop for IRRI Country Offices held


The Management Services Country Offices Workshop was held on 12 - 14 November 2013 at headquarters. Norman Macdonald opened the program and highlighted key MS priorities for country offices. The workshop emphasized a few key areas (HR upgrades, RMQA, OHS, OCS, Transport, upgrading of IT capacities e.g. video conferencing and Google apps). Presenters made the sessions as interactive as possible. The focus was on helping COs to do their jobs better and for HQ to understand the CO operational challenges.

This year’s workshop was attended by 18 participants from 8 country offices. IRRI holds presentation skills workshop


The third Effective Presentation Skills (EPS) workshop was held on 12-14 November 2013 at headquarters.

The 3-day program aims to develop and strengthen the presentation skills of the participants. Such skills include planning the content, delivering effective speaking techniques, designing powerful visual aids, and gaining control during the presentation. Participants apply what they have learned through oral presentation, and peer feedback helps them to further improve their delivery.

The Project Management Workshop was held for 20 IRRI staff on 29-31 October 2013 at headquarters. The program is designed for those who are either learning about project management for the first time, or those who would like a refresher of the basic skills and processes.

Dr. Rodel Lasco speaks at the 3rd Mentoring Lunch

Dr. Rodel D. Lasco, Senior Scientist and Philippine Coordinator for World Agroforestry Centre, shared his perspectives about his mentoring experiences during the Mentoring Lunch on 7 November 2013.

During the program, Dr. Lasco highlighted the importance of mentor and mentee relationship. He advised that the mentees should keep an open mind and acknowledge the inputs from their mentor in as much as the mentors should allow their mentees to shine. Moreover, both should have the passion and dedication for learning.

Mentoring lunches are held to give mentor-mentee pairs the opportunity to get together on a regular basis and continue discussions in an informal atmosphere. At each gathering, a speaker is invited to share personal thoughts on mentoring, and to interact with the mentoring pairs. This is part of the on-going support to mentoring at IRRI, which is organized by the Human Resource Services (HRS).

Call for relief donations to victims of typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in Tacloban, Leyte

IRRI through the Philippine Desk, Partnerships Office is responding to the immediate call for assistance for those badly affected by typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda especially in Leyte and Samar.

IRRI staff who would like to give their personal donations through the sector organizations may contact Jenny Hernandez (AISAS); Ramon Oliveros (SINOP); Ma. Luz Malabayabas (IFSA); Irma Tamisin (AIRESS); Ando Radanielson (AFSTRI), and Stella Bouman (IRS spouses), or through each organizational unit (OU) administrative coordinator or secretary.

All cash donations will be properly acknowledged. The Philippine Desk is coordinating with the Philippine Red Cross which has its relief assistance systems and personnel working 24 hours on the ground in all affected areas.

The deadline for cash donations is on 5pm of Friday, November 15th. Checks can be made payable to The Philippine Red Cross.

HRS orientation conducted in IBO's Jessore and Khulna Hubs


The IRRI Bangladesh Office (IBO) held its first local orientation program for 15 Nationally Recruited Staff from  October 22 to 24  2013 in Jessore and Khulna hubs.

Facilitated by Nova Sarker of the HRS, the orientation program includes presentation and discussion about the IRRI's mission, values, goals, and discussed policies on Harassment & Discrimination, Whistle-Blower and Disciplinary Procedure. She introduced the Human Resource Services (HRS) team based in the IRRI-HQ and the team's roles and responsibilities. She also informed staff on compensation and benefits including the new employee rewards and recognition programs such as Semi Annual Team and Manager’s Discretionary Awards.

Loretta Hempsall, CSM for IBO was also present to provide assistance and decision to related issues.

HQ sportsfest bowling finals coming in mid November

The IRRI Sportsfest Bowling Tournament is down to the final elimination in November at Student Union (SU) Bowling Lanes at University of the Philippines in Los Baños.

The fourth game between Yellow and Violet will be held on 11 November 2013. After this game, the teams who will play for the championship on 13 November 2013 will be determined.

IRRI holds Q4-2013 Health & Wellness Fair at headquarters


Over 500 staff and dependents joined the Q4-2013 Health and Wellness Fair themed: “Health Beat 2013: Smart Practices & Practical Learning” on 24-25 October 2013 at headquarters. Attendance increased by 34% following the Q3-2013 Health & Wellness Fair themed: “Nutri-Up: Healthy Options and Choices” which over 400 staff participated.

The aim of the event is to provide valuable health information , extend  related services and encourage program participants to make positive health behavior changes and to assume responsibility for their own well being.

The quarterly Health & Wellness Fair  is an educational and interactive event designed to support Occupational Health (OH) services at IRRI,  which includes preventive care and corrective health management such as  medical screening and evaluation, practical and timely  learning sessions on common diseases, and health counseling  for  employees.

The 2-day program included free medical consultations, blood pressure check, bone scanning, eye check up, product sampling, stress relieving activities, and health lectures / learning sessions on Stroke, Heart Attack, Eye Care, and Chikungunya.

GQNC staff recognized through IRRI Manager’s Discretionary Awards

Cindy Llorente, a Researcher at Grain Quality and Nutrition Center (GQNC), is IRRI’s Manager’s Discretionary Award (MDA) winner in October 2013.

Cindy was recognized for her extraordinary work in improving the occupational health and safety practices of the GQNC staff. According to her supervisors, “through her consistent efforts, the safety culture in the GQNC has improved immensely, from its already high emphasis on safety. Laboratory rules and safety habits are now being followed more closely by staff and students. Her ability and dedication to improve laboratory culture has been an exemplary example of performance that is above and beyond what is expected…”

Cindy was chosen after a nomination process which began at Organizational Unit (OU) level and which included a review and assessment by the relevant Deputy Director General.

Cindy is the ninth MDA recipient since the program was first launched in June 2013.

IRRI continues to receive MDA nominations and enables managers (NRS Job Levels 7 to 8, PDF and IRS) to recognize single instances of extraordinary work performed by IRRI Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) in headquarters and country offices. IRRI spouse recognized at SUHAY Book Sale


Patti Heong was recognized at the SUHAY Book Sale last Wednesday 26 October 2013 for her continuing support of SUHAY during the 25+ years that she has been at IRRI with her spouse Dr. K. L. Heong. Patti will be leaving soon due to the retirement of Dr. Heong.

SUHAY is an organization of the international spouses at IRRI that provides support to two feeding centers in Los Banos as well as other projects in the community.

IRRI holds final PRINCE2 Foundation Certification Program in 2013


IRRI held the last delivery for 2013 of the PRINCE2 Foundation Certification Program on 22-25 November at Headquarters.

PRINCE2 is a process-based approach for project management, providing an easily tailored and scaleable project management methodology for the management of all types of projects. The method is the de-facto standard for project management in the UK and is practiced worldwide.

The program participants were Reggie Armiendo (HRS), Roger Cabunagan (PBGB), Patria Gonzales (SHU), Vel Ilao (DRPC), Joel Janiya (CESD), Gilda Jonson (PBGB), Yoichiro Kato (CESD), Becks Laza (CESD), Donnina Lopez (Control), Lily Molina (GQNC), Louisa Rapson (IMU), Eric Reynoso (PBGB), and Rod Tomambo (ES).

The course was facilitated by Guhan Thasapalan of HiLogic. HiLogic is a portfolio, programme and project management training and consulting services company with a long history in delivering high quality services in Australia, Asia Pacific Region and United Kingdom.

Joint IRRI Occupational Health and Safety Committee first meeting held


The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committee held its first meeting on 22 October 2013 at headquarters.

The HRS Director and OHS Committee Chair, Fiona Farrell, was present to thank the committee members in advance for their contributions to the committee. She summarized the objectives for creating the joint IRRI Occupational Health and Safety Committee, and discussed the terms of reference of committee members that will plan, develop, and support the implementation of OHS programs for the Institute globally.

The first committee meeting was attended by the following: Jose Luis (OHS Committee Secretary / SSS), Joyce Finegan (HRS), Joshua Mendoza (HRS), Richmond Reyes (IRRI Medical Clinic), Chery Ann Malabuyoc (IRRI Medical Clinic), Glenn Gregorio (PBGB), Marichu Bernardo (RMQA), Lilia Molina (GQNC), Divine Pantig (PPS), Jon Cinconiegue, Jr. (TS), group and sector representatives including Jun Madrid (Job levels 1-3), Joseph Sandro (IFSA), Jenny Hernandez (AISAS), Rogelio Quintos (SINOP), Kai Wang (AFSTRI), and Country Offices representatives (via WebEx) composed of Sonya McGuinness (India), and Bidyuth Mahalder on behalf of Loretta Hempsall (Bangladesh). The committee is working to review and give their comments on the draft IRRI OHS Policy for submission to the Committee Chair a month after.

HQ Sportsfest’s bowling tournament season kicked off



IRRI sportsfest’s bowling tournament kicked off this October 2013 at Student Union (SU) Bowling Lanes at University of the Philippines in Los Baños. The bowling event is a three team, double-round robin match divided into women and men’s division.

The first round started off between Blue team and Yellow team on 16th October followed by Blue versus Violet on 18th October.

During the first game, Blue won with 758 points against Yellow with 745 points for the men’s division. For the women’s division, Blue won with 715 points against Yellow with 639 points.

On the second game, the Violet team won with 728 points against Blue with 718 points for men’s division. For the women’s division, Blue team won with 690 points against Violet with 621 points.

Standard Job Profiles for NRS Country Offices now available in the IRRI Job Dictionary

After finalizing standard Job Profiles for positions based in Headquarters in May, HRS has now created standard NRS Country Office Job Profiles, with the assistance of staff in IRRI Country Offices in Bangladesh and India.

All Standard Job Profiles are now available on the HR Services Portal. Kindly also find attached an overview of all NRS Job Profiles.

The Standard Job Profiles of the remaining positions in CIO-ITS and LDS, Finance, and HRS are awaiting the completion of the re-organization ongoing in those units.

All Supervisors are now requested to view the standard job profiles and ensure that all staff have an accurate and appropriate job profile. Should supervisors believe there is a need for a change in job level or position title, then can first discuss with their OU Head in advance of discussion with HRS.

Consultation sessions on NRS Career Paths implemented, but feedback still welcome

In September, HRS organized 12 consultation sessions in HQ and CO on the draft Guidelines for Appointment, Reclassification, Promotion and Transfer, also called the NRS Career Path Guidelines. The draft was shared with a range of staff and supervisors. HRS have already received very valuable feedback, which they will incorporate in the document.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to review the draft Guidelines and provide feedback, please view them on the HR Services Portal.

Once finalized, the Guidelines will detail how staff on NRS contacts are appointed and can advance in their careers at IRRI.

2013 Sportsfest update

The 2013 IRRI Sportsfest season of Table Tennis and Badminton has officially ended on 1st and 11th October 2013, respectively at headquarters.

Three competing teams have joined the activity: Blue Team (comprised of staff from Experiment Station, Training Center, Safety and Security Services, Library & Documentation Services, Information Technology Services, Events, Visitors, and Exhibits Office, Communications & Publications Services, Food and Housing Services, Transport Services, FF Hill Building, Harrar Hall, Khush Hall Building occupants, Brent-IRRI, Clinic staff, and ECDC); Violet Team (comprised of staff from Crop & Environmental Sciences Division, C4 Rice Center, Social Sciences Division, Grain Quality Nutrition Center, and Physical Plant Services);  and Yellow Team (comprised of staff from Plant Breeding, Genetics & Biotechnology, TTC-Genetic Resources Center, Seed Health Unit, and Risk Management Quality Assurance).

For the Table tennis, Yellow team won the Championship while Violet team at first place, and Blue team at second place.

For Badminton, Yellow team emerged as Champion while the Blue team came in at first place, and Violet at second.

Other games that have concluded in this year’s Sportsfest are Lawn tennis, Softball, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, and Fun Run.

Voluntary early retirement program at headquarters info session held; now accepting 2013 applications


Headquarters-based participants joined the 2013 IRRI Mutually Agreed Early Retirement Program (ERP) information session on 1 October 2013.

Joyce Finegan and Ken Masaredo shared the ERP eligibility requirements, application procedures, benefits of joining the program, and the implementation timelines. Also included in the discussion were the support programs available for retirees through HRS- Workplace Relations and Advisory Services. These include, training on livelihood programs and orientation on practical business options, lectures on wealth management, access to employee counseling and health and wellness programs.

NRS HQ-based employees are eligible to apply for ERP, if they meet the following criteria: (1) Currently working as a full time employee; (2) Aged 55 to 63 years old as of his/her last birthday preceding the date of application; and; (3) Has served the Institute for at least 20 years of continuous employment.

All interested and eligible applicants are requested to complete the ERP application forms, which must be accompanied by succession and turnover plans, and forward to HRS Workplace Relations & Advisory Services (HRS-WRAS) on or before Wednesday, 04 December 2013.


Working Committee to hold First Regular Meeting

The recently created working committee for the development of the new IFEA model will hold its first regular meeting on 11 October 2013. At this meeting, the committee will review the constitution and By-Laws of past employee associations like CIEM and CIE including IFEA. They will also determine if there is a need for the creation of AdHoc Committees, to support the working committee in completing their workplan.

IRRI continues to promote workplace health and wellness through special fitness programs

Since the launch of the Group Exercise Classes at Headquarters in April 2013, two of the most popular fitness programs have been Yoga and Zumba.

One exercise enthusiast says, “the zumba classes at IRRI are very helpful for me in achieving my immediate health and fitness objectives. I have to have a regular form of exercise to help manage my blood pressure and blood sugar, and the Zumba classes that I've attended, combined with a diet that was prescribed by my internist, helped me achieve my goals and I've lost almost 25 lbs in three months! I hope IRRI continues to offer this wonderful program. It is also a very effective way to relieve me of work-related stress... “Yoga is perfect for many IRRI staff who  spend the whole day sitting in front of the computer, cos it provided the much needed stretching and tension releasing exercise routines,” says a Yoga enthusiast employee.

Zumba classes are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 AM to 6:30 AM. Special sessions for IRRI spouses/partners are held every Monday and Thursday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. IRRI. Yoga classes are held every Friday from 5:40 PM to 6:40 PM.

Group exercise classes are part of the HRS Health and Wellness program.  Participants are required to sign-up every class day to secure a space. IRRI Bangladesh Office's SARCCAB and SUSFER staff contributions appreciated


On 30th September, the IBO Corporate Services team formally recognized the important contributions of staff from the SARCCAB and SUSFER projects in Dhaka.

Drs. Paul Fox and Zainul Abedin, the present and past IBO Representatives expressed their thanks. "There never really is goodbye but rather until next time." – said Fox. Abedin added "It was the dedication and hard work of each staff that contributed to the success of the projects." Staff received flowers and plaques of appreciation.

SARCCAB (Support to Agricultural Research for Climate Change Adaptation in Bangladesh) started in 23 September 2009. SUSFER (Sustainable Soil Management for Food Security of Poor, Small and Marginal Farmers of Active Flood Plain and Charlands of Bangladesh) started in July 2010.

2nd Luncheon meeting held for 2013 Mentoring Program participants


As part of the on-going support to mentoring at IRRI, a second luncheon meeting was held on 27 September 2013 in headquarters.

Participants of the on-going Mentoring Program were invited  including, Marichu Bernardo, Janet Lazarte, Matty Demont, Katie Nelson, Lilia Molina, Cyhdar Racho, Charisse Arlegui, Vina Alvarez, Estela Pasuquin, Ken McNally, and Julian Lapitan.

During the meeting, the program participants gave progress updates, and shared how the program is benefiting both mentors and mentees. An exchange of ideas also took place on how to further strengthen the IRRI mentoring program.

Such informal lunches are held to give mentor-mentee pairs the opportunity to get together and share experiences within the framework of the one-year mentoring program.

Working committee begins to consider the New IFEA Model

The working committee for the development of the IRRI Filipino Employees Association (IFEA) Model held its first meeting on 13 September 2013.

The HRS Director, Fiona Farrell, was present to thank the committee members in advance for their contributions to this important project. She summarized the evolution of employee associations at IRRI, and clarified the objectives of this working committee, including the expected deliverables and timeline. The committee is working to produce a draft of a new IFEA model for discussion with the HRS Director by 20 December 2013.

IRRI holds presentation skills workshop



10 staff attended the Effective Presentation Skills (EPS) workshop held on 18-20 September 2013 at IRRI headquarters.

EPS is an 11-module program that aims to develop and strengthen the presentation skills of the participants. Such skills include planning the content, delivering effective speaking techniques, designing powerful visual aids, and gaining control during the presentation. Participants apply what they have learned through oral presentation, and peer feedback helps them to further improve their delivery.

Participants are Bernadette Avance (PBGB), Louella Bien Bagis (CIO-LDS), Aileen Rochelle Capistrano (ES), Joy Hasmin Delos Reyes (CESD), Imee Eden Di (ICRAF), Gladys Ebron (PR), Florencio Lapis (SHU), Michaela Glaiza Milagrosa (IPNI), Maybellene Mendoza (ICRAF), and John Paulo Valmon (EVEO).

This interactive training continues to receive positive participant feedback since it was held for the first time in 2011.

20 HQ-based staff received basic occupational safety and health certification


IRRI held Basic Occupational Safety & Health (BOSH) training at headquarters on September 2-6, 2013.

The five-day session focused on occupational safety & health functions and standards; recognizing, identifying and evaluating occupational hazards and recommending a systematic approach for its prevention & control. The session meets the accreditation requirements to be recognized as safety practitioners by the Bureau of Working Conditions.

The seminar was attended by Aniceta Barretto (PBGB), Marichu Bernardo (RMQA), Jerome Carandang (PBGB), Ma. Potenciana Caisip (SSD), Generoso Dimasuay (ES), Joyce Finegan (HRS), Ma. Consultation sessions on NRS career path ongoing

Approximately 100 staff have already participated in the ongoing consultations on the draft Guidelines for the Appointment and Promotion of Nationally Recruited Staff. Organized by Human Resource Services (HRS), these on-going consultation sessions provide an opportunity for staff to participate in meaningful discussions on the important matter of NRS career paths.

Once finalized, the Guidelines will detail how staff on NRS contacts are appointed and can advance in their careers at IRRI.

Consultation sessions will continue at IRRI Headquarters until September 18th, and will then move on to IRRI Country Offices.

2013 IPaD and PAS year-end review reminders

HRS would like to remind all staff of the need to plan and prepare in advance for the 2013 year-end Performance Reviews. HRS will send a detailed schedule in the coming weeks.

During workplace performance reviews, staff and supervisors jointly recognize success, problem-solve challenges, discuss results, and agree on year-end performance expectations.

2013 IRRI-HQ Sportsfest: Violet team wins Fun Run

More than 100 employees from different organizational units, both science and admin support, participated in the Sportsfest Fun Run which was held on August 29, 2013.

Three competing teams have joined the activity: Blue Team (comprised of staff from Experiment Station, Training Center, Safety and Security Services, Library & Documentation Services, Information Technology Services, Events, Visitors, and Exhibits Office, Communications & Publications Services, Food and Housing Services, Transport Services, FF Hill Building, Harrar Hall, Khush Hall Building occupants, Brent-IRRI, Clinic staff, and ECDC); Violet Team (comprised of staff from Crop & Environmental Sciences Division, C4 Rice Center, Social Sciences Division, Grain Quality Nutrition Center, Physical Plant Services, Lazaga (Janitorial);  and Yellow Team (comprised of staff from Plant Breeding, Genetics & Biotechnology, TTC-Genetic Resources Center, Seed Health Unit, and Risk Management Quality Assurance).

The Violet team won the championship with 157 points, the Yellow team came in second with 136 points, and Blue team was in third place with 69 points.
