IRRI-India celebrates International Women’s Day

The IRRI India Office celebrated International Women’s Day on 8 March 2013. All New Delhi staff and visiting international staff gathered to celebrate the achievements of women in line with the year’s gender agenda that is already gaining momentum across the world.

J.K. Ladha, IRRI representative for India and Nepal, spoke on the accession appreciating the manifold role women are playing in the lives of all human beings right their birth. He lauded the great contributions made by outstanding women in the country, naming a few: Indira Gandhi, the first woman prime minister of India; Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian woman in space; and Mother Theresa.

Sheetal Sharma, postdoctoral fellow, spoke on the origin and relevance of the day. Dr. Ladha later invited Sam Mohanty and Thelma Paris, who were both in India at the time to lead IRRI's gender program, to give messages.
