IRRI Manager’s Discretionary Awards in September 2013


For September 2013, IRRI recognizes the extraordinary work of four staff from the Experiment Station through the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA). The winners are Felecito Aringo, Jr., Juanito Rosario, Joselito Liwanagan, and Anthony Aquino.

Felecito, Juanito, Joselito, and Anthony were chosen after a nomination process which began at Organizational Unit (OU) level and which included a review and assessment by the relevant Deputy Director General.

IRRI’s Manager’s Discretionary Awards Program enables managers (NRS Job Levels 7 to 8, PDF and IRS) to recognize single instances of extraordinary work performed by IRRI Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS). Working committee begins to consider the New IFEA Model

The working committee for the development of the IRRI Filipino Employees Association (IFEA) Model held its first meeting on 13 September 2013.

The HRS Director, Fiona Farrell, was present to thank the committee members in advance for their contributions to this important project. She summarized the evolution of employee associations at IRRI, and clarified the objectives of this working committee, including the expected deliverables and timeline. The committee is working to produce a draft of a new IFEA model for discussion with the HRS Director by 20 December 2013.

The working committee members include Joel Janiya (CESD) – elected Chair, Badet Avance (PBGB) – elected Secretary, Rogelio Cabunagan (PBGB), Teodoro Correa, Jr. (CESD), Noel Nathaniel Fonseca (CIO-LDS), Niño Banayo (CESD), Adoracion Resurreccion (GQNC), Maria Leah Cruz (CPS), and Charizabel Fortunado (OER-DO).

All IRRI staff are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas with the working committee.

More IRRI staff are now PRINCE2 certified



IRRI held the latest delivery of the PRINCE2 Foundation Certification Program on 11-13 September 2013 at headquarters.

PRINCE2 is a process-based approach for project management, providing an easily tailored and scaleable project management methodology for the management of all types of projects. The method is the de-facto standard for project management in the UK and is practiced worldwide.

The IRRI program participants were Priscilla Argosino (FHS), Wallace Daniels (HRS), Noel Magor (TC), Anilyn Maningas (TC), Selene Ocampo (HRS), Ando Mariot Radanielson (CESD), Bjoern Ole Sander (CESD), and Impa Somayanda (CESD). They were joined by ten CIFOR staff, who are based in Indonesia.

The program was facilitated by Vincent Marsi of HiLogic, a portfolio, programme and project management training and consulting services company with a long history in delivering high quality services in Australia, Asia Pacific Region and United Kingdom.

IRRI holds presentation skills workshop



10 staff attended the Effective Presentation Skills (EPS) workshop held on 18-20 September 2013 at IRRI headquarters.

EPS is an 11-module program that aims to develop and strengthen the presentation skills of the participants. Such skills include planning the content, delivering effective speaking techniques, designing powerful visual aids, and gaining control during the presentation. Participants apply what they have learned through oral presentation, and peer feedback helps them to further improve their delivery.

Participants are Bernadette Avance (PBGB), Louella Bien Bagis (CIO-LDS), Aileen Rochelle Capistrano (ES), Joy Hasmin Delos Reyes (CESD), Imee Eden Di (ICRAF), Gladys Ebron (PR), Florencio Lapis (SHU), Michaela Glaiza Milagrosa (IPNI), Maybellene Mendoza (ICRAF), and John Paulo Valmon (EVEO).

This interactive training continues to receive positive participant feedback since it was held for the first time in 2011.

The workshop was facilitated by Ralph Guzman of Guthrie-Jensen, a leading management training and consultancy firm in the Philippines.

20 HQ-based staff received basic occupational safety and health certification


IRRI held Basic Occupational Safety & Health (BOSH) training at headquarters on September 2-6, 2013.

The five-day session focused on occupational safety & health functions and standards; recognizing, identifying and evaluating occupational hazards and recommending a systematic approach for its prevention & control. The session meets the accreditation requirements to be recognized as safety practitioners by the Bureau of Working Conditions.

The seminar was attended by Aniceta Barretto (PBGB), Marichu Bernardo (RMQA), Jerome Carandang (PBGB), Ma. Potenciana Caisip (SSD), Generoso Dimasuay (ES), Joyce Finegan (HRS), Ma. Celeste Banaticla-Hilario (TTC-GRC), Caloy Huelma (SHU), Cindy Llorente (GQNC), Vitaliano Lopena (PBGB), Jose Luis (SSS), Atanacio Orence (SHU), Norman Oliva (PBGB), Jan Michael Orlina (C4C), Jerone Onoya (CESD), Elizabeth Panganiban (FHS), Isidro Panopio (C4C), Cyhdar Racho (SSS), Richmond Reyes (HRS/IRRI-Clinic), and Mercy Samia (PBGB).

The workshop was facilitated by Benhur Refuerzo, Valeriana Reyes and Frumencio Tan, Jr. of the World Safety Organization (WSO) - Philippines. WSO provides facilities to pool technological and methodological knowledge in the health, safety, environmental and accident prevention profession worldwide.

Consultation sessions on NRS career path ongoing

Approximately 100 staff have already participated in the ongoing consultations on the draft Guidelines for the Appointment and Promotion of Nationally Recruited Staff. Organized by Human Resource Services (HRS), these on-going consultation sessions provide an opportunity for staff to participate in meaningful discussions on the important matter of NRS career paths.

Once finalized, the Guidelines will detail how staff on NRS contacts are appointed and can advance in their careers at IRRI.

Consultation sessions will continue at IRRI Headquarters until September 18th, and will then move on to IRRI Country Offices.

2013 IPaD and PAS year-end review reminders

HRS would like to remind all staff of the need to plan and prepare in advance for the 2013 year-end Performance Reviews. HRS will send a detailed schedule in the coming weeks.

During workplace performance reviews, staff and supervisors jointly recognize success, problem-solve challenges, discuss results, and agree on year-end performance expectations.

2013 IRRI-HQ Sportsfest: Violet team wins Fun Run

More than 100 employees from different organizational units, both science and admin support, participated in the Sportsfest Fun Run which was held on August 29, 2013.

Three competing teams have joined the activity: Blue Team (comprised of staff from Experiment Station, Training Center, Safety and Security Services, Library & Documentation Services, Information Technology Services, Events, Visitors, and Exhibits Office, Communications & Publications Services, Food and Housing Services, Transport Services, FF Hill Building, Harrar Hall, Khush Hall Building occupants, Brent-IRRI, Clinic staff, and ECDC); Violet Team (comprised of staff from Crop & Environmental Sciences Division, C4 Rice Center, Social Sciences Division, Grain Quality Nutrition Center, Physical Plant Services, Lazaga (Janitorial);  and Yellow Team (comprised of staff from Plant Breeding, Genetics & Biotechnology, TTC-Genetic Resources Center, Seed Health Unit, and Risk Management Quality Assurance).

The Violet team won the championship with 157 points, the Yellow team came in second with 136 points, and Blue team was in third place with 69 points.

IRRI holds interviewing skills training



IRRI held Essential Interview Skills Training on 28-29 August 2013. The two-day training was facilitated by Chris Dixon of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Founded in 2000, CIPD is a professional association for human resource management professionals, and is headquartered in London, England.

The training was attended by members of the Human Resource Services (HRS) team based in the Philippines and Bangladesh, as well as colleagues from GQNC and CESD. The event was organized by HRS.

IRRI concludes 2013 Flu Vaccination Program for HQ-based employees and dependents

A total of 1,069 HQ-based employees and their dependents received their flu vaccines on June 6-7, July 30, and August 30, 2013.

The Flu Vaccination Program promotes an awareness of the risks associated with the influenza virus in the workplace, and is part of IRRI’s Health & Wellness Program. IRRI holds mentoring program lunch


As part of the ongoing support to the formal Mentoring Program at IRRI, the Institute hosted a mentoring luncheon meeting on 30th August.

Such informal lunches are held to give mentor-mentee pairs the opportunity to get together and share experiences within the framework of the one-year mentoring program.

The event was organized by Human Resource Services (HRS).
