IRRI India Office Celebrates the 2014 International Women's Day with the DG

IRRI Director General, Dr. Robert 'Bob' Zeigler celebrated IWD over lunch with the staff in the IRRI India Office. Bob spoke on how pleased he was to be in India and of the many changes he has seen in IIO from his first visit. The staff numbers have grown significantly but IIO still faces challenges in its gender profile. Bob said changing that profile is the responsibility of all members of the team and one of the core means of doing so is maintaining a respectful workplace. Dr. J.K. Ladha, IRRI Representative, agreed and said that changing the gender statistics in India is a priority. He also spoke of the wider importance of women in agriculture in India.

To add fun and excitement, IIO also had on-line IWD-quiz that ran few days before the actual celebration. The DG was happy to give away the awards to Dr. Najam Waris Zaidi who won first prize and Mr. Dayam Khan for the second prize.

Ms. Sonya McGuinness, Corporate Services Manager, closed the formal part of the event by saying that the aim was not to celebrate the contribution of women to IRRI in India but also to recognize the additional challenges that women face in the workplace. Workplace Communications Article No. 2014-027
