2014 IRRI Sportsfest: "It’s PaLAY Time 2! opens

IRRI headquarters, May 30 - It was a fun and exciting Friday afternoon when the Institute launched its 37th Sportsfest themed "It’s PaLAY Time 2!” The annual event was organized by HRS Workplace Relations & Advisory Services (HRS-WRAS) in partnership with the recognized sector organizations: IRRI Filipino Scientists Association (IFSA), Society of IRRI Non-research Professionals (SINOP), Association of IRRI Secretaries and Administrative Staff (AISAS), and Association of Fellows, Scholars, Trainees and Residents of IRRI (AFSTRI). This is the first time that HRS had involved the active participation of the sector organizations on various sports events which would last for three months (June - August 2014).

Director for Human Resource Services Christine Croombes delivered the welcoming remarks to officially start the program. The event kicked-off with the awarding of 2013 winners: Violet team at second place with 240 points, Blue team at first place with 290 points, and the Yellow team who bagged last year’s Championship with 310 points. After the awarding ceremony, the 2014 team colors were introduced: Light Blue, Red, and Pink team. The introduction of the new team line-up and coordinators was followed by an oath of sportsmanship lead by Bjoern Ole Sander of Crop and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD).

The most awaited part of the program was the opening of Fun Run at IRRI grounds, which had race categories in 2KM and 4KM. This year’s run was not only intended for the competitive runner, but also to encourage all employees to go out, have fun, meet people, and engage in activities that promote healthy lifestyle. In addition to employees, some of their family members, friends, and other colleagues outside IRRI also participated in the event. Before they have hit their running shoes on the IRRI grounds, they enjoyed a warm-up exercise with the guest dance instructor, DranReb.

The run started and finished at the back of DL Umali Building, which also featured great music, food booths and drinks. At the end of the program, the fastest runners (male and female) in each run category were recognized and all of the registered participants with certificates.

Overall, the event was successfully held, with an increase of 50% participation, as it drew more than 100 runners for this year.

HRS announced the Closing Day of the 2014 Sportsfest, which will happen on a weekend in September where Championship and Traditional Games will be held.

The event was hosted by Margeorie Vasquez and Josh Mendoza of HRS.
