SUHAY holds final graduation ceremony for children in Los Baños; ties-up with IRRI's Partnerships Office for future community programs

One era has ended for SUHAY and another has begun. On Thursday 24 April 2014, the last group of children graduated from the SUHAY feeding centers in Bayog and Mayondon. On hand were former graduates of the SUHAY feeding program who returned for the closing ceremonies. Former graduate Mary Joy Eljera, who is now a teacher in Bayog, was Emcee for the program. Also on the program was former SUHAY graduate Jose Manuel De Luna who graduated from UPLB on Saturday 26 April 2014.

Attending the ceremonies were SUHAY Vice-President Cora Alonzo, coordinator of the feeding centers; Beatriz Alzona Sanguyo, feeding center care-giver; and SUHAY members, Stella Bouman and Rose Quick.

SUHAY was organized in 1964 with the help of Lina Lopez as an informal association of concerned members of the IRRI-UPLB community interested in helping out the area's less-privileged.

Activities have changed over the years as the needs in the area have changed. At one time or another, SUHAY has provided medical assistance, helped to set up blood donor rosters, sponsored malnutrition wards for children, and provided food and clothing to victims of typhoons, floods, and other natural disasters. SUHAY has been supporting feeding centers for malnourished children since 1978.

Judy Buresh, SUHAY President and Family Liaison Officer in the HRS, reports that although SUHAY has closed the feeding program, the international spouses and partners at IRRI are expanding their community involvement through partnership with the Philippine Desk (PD) in the Partnerships Office at IRRI concentrating on activities promoting the well-being of women and children. AISAS celebrates 2014 Administrative Professionals Week

In a busy working environment, it is impossible to disregard the role of the secretaries and administrative assistants. They are the people behind the scenes who work on the small but critical matters and take time to double check everything to ensure smooth flow of the processes. They make sure that outputs are effectively delivered on time in addition to attending to the daily demands and pressures in the workplace.

To honor the important role of the administrative professionals, the Association of IRRI Secretaries and Administrative Staff (AISAS), a recognized sector organization at IRRI headquarters, held the 2014 Administrative Professionals Week on 21-25 April 2014. The celebration is held annually with activities that provide strategies to becoming more effective in handling difficult situations and be more productive in work and personal life.

Program includes the “Time and Stress Management Workshop” that was held on 21-22 April. This was followed by a Zumba Dance Party (photo) held last 25 April, as a culminating activity, giving importance to health and wellness in the workplace through a special fitness program.

The program was organized in partnership with Human Resource Services (HRS).

AISAS encourages everyone in giving importance in professionalizing the administrative functions. HRS Workplace Communications Article No. 2014-049
