IRRI Year-end Celebration - A Night of Tribute and Broadway!


Winners of the Best in Costume Contest -Group Category: 1st Prize- CESD (Mary Poppins Musical), 2nd Prize-GQNC (Cats Musical), and 3rd Prize-SCS (New York, New York Musical). For the Best in Costume Individual Category, winners are: 1st Prize- Joan Ynion from SSD (Annie Musical), 2nd Prize – Digna Manzanilla from CESD (Charlston Musical), and 3rd Prize- Margaret Catolos from PBGB (Wicked Musical).

What did Elphaba, Peter Pan, Annie, Eponine, Bialystock, Mary Poppins and Roxanne have in common? They all went to IRRI’s Hats-Off Celebration!

11th December was a night of glitz and glamour as staff came to the party wearing the costume of their favorite Broadway musical characters. The event has a “Hats Off” tagline to give tribute to IRRI’s past, present and future endeavors. The tribute to the out-going Director General, Robert Zeigler highlighted the event. Special DG tribute videos were shown which brought smiles and tears of joy to everyone present. Copies of special issue of Rice Today featuring the highlights of DG Zeigler’s IRRI career was also presented and distributed. Presentations from the Brent school students, IRRI spouses and staff made the night even more colorful.

Towards the evening, staff and guests enjoyed the sumptuous food served, while lucky staffs brought home exciting games and raffle prizes. Real show stoppers were the winners of the Best in Costume contest for the Individual and Group categories.  Everyone partied and sang-along the night away. The whole evening was filled with fun, laughter, nostalgia, food, games and tons of surprises!

It’s been a tough year but we should all be proud of what we accomplished together. Let’s raise a glass – to us, to our families and to a happy 2016!

IRRI Annual Service Awards and Employee Recognition Program successfully held

The 2015 Annual Service Awards recipients: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service

A total of 102 staff were awarded during the 2015 Annual Service Awards and Employee Recognition Program held on 11 December 2015 at headquarters. The annual program brings the IRRI community together to acknowledge the years of service and celebrate the accomplishments of staff members. Recognized also in the ceremony were the winners of the Year-end 2014 Semi-Annual Awards (SATA), the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA), and the Nationally Recruited Staff Awards (NRS). Plaques and certificates of recognition to the program recipients were presented by the out-going Director General Robert Zeigler, Deputy Director General for Research and in-coming Director General Matthew Morell and Director for Human Resources Services Christine Croombes.
The program which started at 8:30AM was attended by the IRRI Management Committee, the honorees’ OU heads and supervisors, as well as their relatives and friends. Light snack followed after the event.

Reneeliza Jean Melgar and Carlito Balingbing Assistant Scientist and Senior Associate Scientist 1 respectively of the Crop and Environmental Sciences Division hosted the event.

November 2015 Recipients of the Manager's Discretionary Award

The Human Resources Services (HRS) is pleased to announce the winners of the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA) in November 2015. They are Bea Martinez, Officer – Events, Visitors and Exhibition Office; and Jocelyn Amarante, Officer – Donor Funding Office.

Bea and Jocelyn received the Manager’s Discretionary Award for demonstrating exceptional performance in their respective roles, which include supporting many of the Institute-wide events that were recently held. Their commitment and dedication beyond their duties and responsibilities contributed substantially to the success of the programs they have managed. In effect, such tremendous effort gave IRRI an opportunity to reach out to the international community, enhance existing ties with the current stakeholders and build up potentially productive partnerships in the future.

Bea and Jocelyn were selected after a nomination process which began at the Organizational Unit (OU) level and which included a review and assessment by the relevant Deputy Director General.

The award recipients will be honored on the upcoming 2015 Annual Service Awards and Recognition Program on December 11.

IRRI to hold the Annual Service Awards and Employee Recognition Program


The Annual Service Awards and Employee Recognition Program, themed "Gems of IRRI" will be held on 11 December 2015 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the D.L. Umali Building, Rooms A, B, & C in headquarters.

The ceremony will honor all staff who worked and served the Institute for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years. The event will also recognize the winners of the 
Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA), the End of year Semi-Annual Team Awards (SATA)and the Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) Awards.

IRRI Medical Clinic (IMC) Info Session held


A total of 195 IRRI employees attended the just concluded one-day IRRI Medical Clinic (IMC) Info Session on Monday, 26 October at the IRRI Harrar Hall Seminar Room. Facilitated by the IRRI Medical Clinic, the info session was organized by the Human Resources - Work Relations & Advisory Services Office. The activity was of two (2) sessions: Morning (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM) and Afternoon (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM). 

During the sessions, Pilipinas 911 CEO, Mr. Ruel Kapunan presented a brief introduction about their company and what they do in terms of emergency response. The Triage Concept was also discussed. IMC Occupational Health Doctor, Dr. Katherine Biscocho-Canubas discussed the clinic service process flow. Proposed activities for the Health and Wellness Program were also presented.

Info Session attendees actively participated in the Question and Answer portion and raised clinic concerns such as clinic supplies, staff APE’s, etc. All these concerns were answered during the session.  

For reference, IMC Services Process Flow copies were also distributed to all attendees.

IRRI Myanmar Activities for the months of September to November 2015

The IRRI Myanmar Office has successfully facilitated the following activities from the months of September, October and November:

·        Benchmark survey on compensation and benefits for national recruited staff - Out of 12 international organizations, the survey was already conducted with 10 organizations by the Corporate Services Manager and HR Business Partner. 

·        English training session for the IRRI Myanmar Office - Started in September and will end by November to complete the 30 hours of training. This is the first run of the English training session for the IRRI Myanmar Office, and attended by most of the nationally recruited staff. 

·        22 October Launching of HR Policy Supplement for IRRI-Myanmar Office - The Manager for Corporate Services Daisy Saludo and HR Business Partner Htaik Htaik Soe explained the HR Policy supplement in detail.  All staff members both from the projects and support teams were present in the event.

First-Aid Training Concluded at the IRRI Myanmar Office


On 19-21 October 2015, a First-Aid training course was held at the IRRI Myanmar Office.  The course was facilitated by the Corporate Services in partnership with the Myanmar Red Cross Society.  First batch training attendees were from the project and support teams.

The 3-day training course covered different first-aid techniques and scenarios such as first-aid concepts, victim assessment, shock, fainting, burns and scalds, wounds and bleeding, CPR, musculoskeletal injuries, poisoning, animal bites and stings, dressing and bandaging, head injury, unconscious handling and transportation.  

Similar training for the rest of the staff members is tentatively scheduled early next year.

‘MyPAD’ (My Performance Plans, Appraisal and Development) to be introduced.

This November, HRS will be introducing a revised version of our performance review form, 'MyPAD' (My Performance Plans, Appraisal and Development). The aim is to simplify the 'form-filling' process and focus more on the discussions between staff member and supervisor.

The Performance Review and Development Planning Process timetable has been adjusted from January to December in order to align the objectives setting and review process to the calendar year.  

Please make sure to attend the Guide to MyPAD information session to be held from 02 to 20 November, 2015. These information sessions which will be arranged for your respective work unit and dates will be published soon.

18 new IRRI-HQ Staff attended myOrientation Program



On 2 October 2015, 18 staff attended myOrientation (New Employee Orientation Program) at the IRRI-HQ. Christine Croombes, IRRI’s Director for Human Resources, welcomed the participants. A hosted-lunch was also organized after the activity. 

The whole-day programme consisted of an overview of IRRI's Research Programs, introductions to the functions of Management Services, and Communication & Partnerships, a walk-through of​ IRRI's History, and​ a Multi-Cultural workshop.​

Writing Winning Scientific Proposals Training held for IRRI Post-Doctoral Fellow


29 Post-Doctoral Fellows attended the training on Writing Winning Scientific Proposals at the IRRI-HQ on 30 September 2015.

To give participants insights to the culture of competing for grants and awards, the processes of assessment, and the elements of successful and unsuccessful proposals were the aims of this workshop.

​ A one and a half-day, one-on-one writing​ coaching session with Dr. Camilla Myers of CSIRO Publishing,​ and​ Dr. Grant Singleton, Principal Scientist at IRRI capped the training activity.  ​.

Publishing with Impact Course successfully held at IRRI-HQ.




On 28-29 September 2015, 24 Post-Doctoral Fellows attended the Publishing with Impact Course held at the IRRI-HQ.

This workshop aims to provide participants with skills and confidence to write scientific papers for successful publication in leading scientific journals.

Dr. Camilla Myers of CSIRO Publishing facilitated the course in cooperation with Dr. Grant Singleton, Principal Scientist at IRRI​.

Preparing for Leadership Module 2-Leading Teams (PDFs Batch 2)




The second module of Preparing for Leadership Training Course for the second batch of Post Doctoral Fellows (PDF) was held on 21-23 September​ ​2015 at the IRRI headquarters. The program was facilitated by Chris Dixon and Sharon Tudela ​ of Growing Edge Limited, a Hong Kong based company providing executive coaching, leadership and organizational development training.

The course is part of IRRI's Leadership Development Architecture for PDFs. It consists of three modules: 1) Leading Self, 2) Leading Teams, and 3) Leading Resources. Target completion of the program will take place in 2016.


A total of 15 ​PDFs based in Headquarters and Country Offices participated in the program namely: Alexander Struart (CESD), Govinda Rizal (C4), Shalabh Dixit (PBGB), Nikolaos Tsakirpaloglou (PBGB), Nyo Me Htwe (CESD), Pieter Rutsaert (SSD), Bryce Blackman (TC), Gudina Feyisa(SSD), Shanta Karki (C4), Geoffrey Onaga (PBGB), Ambica Paliwal (SSD), Suchit Shrestha (CESD), Jae Sung Lee (TTCGRC), Johnvie Goloran (CESD) & Millicent Sanciangco (TTCGRC).

Ten Sessions of Computer-Based Training for IRRI Staff Completed

Human Resource Services, in partnership with Information Technology Services, has completed 10 sessions of Computer-Based Training for IRRI staff from July to August 2015 at the IT Learning Center. The training is composed of three modules – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The objectives include teaching staff how to file for reimbursement for the new medical plan provided by Cigna, as well as learn the process of applying for leave of absence in One Corporate System (OCS).

As of 27 August, 112 staff have completed the training course; (3 from C4C, 8 from CESD, 17 from TTCGRC, 21 from ES, 31 from PTS, and 32 from PBGB).

7th Essential First-Aid Training Concluded


The 7th Essential First Aid Training was concluded on 4 September 2015 at  IRRI headquarters.  The course was facilitated by the Human Resource Services (HRS), in partnership with Safety & Security Services Office.
  
Attended by 22 HQ-based staff, the training was focused on responding to cardiac and breathing emergencies, including the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), responding to common first aid emergencies, including burns, cuts, head, neck and back injuries, and recognizing and preventing cardiac arrest.

Preparing for Leadership Course Module 2 held at HQ


IRRI holds the second module of Preparing for Leadership on 10-12 August 2015 at headquarters. The program was facilitated by Chris Dixon and Lilian Wang of Growing Edge based in Hong Kong.

INDIA: Odisha Governor awarded IRRI staff for exemplary academic achievement


Suryakanta Khandai, Post Harvest Specialist in IRRI India Office, received a Gold Medal for demonstrating exemplary academic achievement, presented by His Excellency Dr. S C Jamir, Honorable Governor of Odisha.  Suryakanta holds a Bachelor of Technology in Agriculture Engineering and Master of Technology in Farm Machinery & Power at Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT), an agricultural university in India.

He joined Bihar hub in September 2013 and is currently involved in promotion and field implementation of post-harvest activities with partners and service providers in Bihar. HRS Workplace Communications Article No. 2015-034
