Two employees recognized for their exceptional performance

Human Resources Services (HRS) is pleased to announce the winners of the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA) for December 2016. They are Sherwin Pineda and Rona Niña Mae Rojas-Azucena, senior specialist and specialist, respectively, at the Communication unit.

Sherwin is being recognized for demonstrating tremendous leadership with his peers in successfully implementing the DG year-end session, planning and implementing a communication strategy for HRDC, and the implementation of the Communicator’s Network for IRRI project communications support.

Rona received the award for bringing a high level of initiative and maturity to her work. She took on the primary role of supporting the on-site communication of the IR8 event in India. She was also asked to develop materials that she has limited experience with and took on the challenges willingly.

IRRI's research chief speaks at first mentoring lunch in 2016


IRRI's Deputy Director General for Research Jacqueline Hughes shared her perspectives on guiding people to find the right direction and helping them develop solutions to career issues during the Mentoring Lunch on 14 December.

“Mentoring relationships are crucial at IRRI,” Dr. Hughes emphasized.  “They let our eyes be open to opportunities, support colleagues in a field we’re good at, and set the scene for younger colleagues by passing on a wealth of knowledge and experience.”

She ended the talk with a quote from Plutarch, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled."

Mentoring lunches are held to give mentor-mentee pairs the opportunity to get together on a regular basis and continue discussions in an informal atmosphere. A speaker is invited to share personal thoughts on mentoring and interact with the pairs. This is part of the on-going support to mentoring at IRRI organized by the Human Resources Services.

2016 Service Awards and Family Fun Day successfully held at HQ




On 7 December, 90 employees from the headquarters and country offices in India and Lao were recognized for their dedication and length of service to the institute.

The awardees and guests were welcomed by the Deputy Director General for Research Jacqueline Hughes. Dr. Hughes also presented the plaques to the 10 to 20 years service awardees while Director General Matthew Morell presented the plaques to the 25 to 40 years of service awardees.

Dr. Morell commended all the service awardees and their families for their invaluable support to the institute.

In addition, Dr. Hughes announced the new and improved IRRI Awards and Recognition Program which will soon be launched by the Human Resource (HR) department. The said program will include the following new award categories:
·       Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
·       Employee of the Month
·       Employee of the Year
·       Team of the Year
·       Scientific Achievement Team award

IRRI Family Fun Day in Action



The Family Fun Day immediately followed the awarding program. Despite the drizzle, IRRI employees and their families, scholars, consultants and guests enjoyed the various fun booths organized for them by HR.

Children and the children-at-heart were treated with assortment of entertaining activities including play pads (castle, fire station, Lego house, bake shop and grocery), game booths (Let’s go fishing, Balloon burst, Hole-in-One and Goal kick), henna tattooing and glitter face painting. To add to the fun, everyone was treated to free ice cream and refreshments.

Local restaurants and food chains set up stalls and food carts to satisfy the food cravings of employees and guests.

The day was raining with fun, laughter and surprises!

Three employees recognized for their exceptional performance

Human Resources Services (HRS) is pleased to announce the winners of the Manager’s Discretionary Awards (MDA) for November 2016. They are Marilyn Belen, senior assistant at the Partnerships and Development Office and Dinh Kim Dung, associate manager at the IRRI Vietnam Office.

Marilyn is being recognized for her exceptional work in the preparations for the 20th Annual CORRA Meeting in South Korea.

Dinh received the award for her exemplary dedication in organizing several events including the Vietnam-IRRI Partnership Meeting, the awarding and dinner reception for Vietnam’s former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat, and the high-profile interviews of Director General Matthew Morell by Vietnam’s news media.

Christopher is acknowledged for his excellent work in a variety of HRS programs & initiatives including the visual design of the International Women’s Day program held last March 2016, and the creation of various Human Resource unit training and instructional materials.

Marilyn, Dinh and Christopher's commitment and dedication beyond their duties and responsibilities substantially contributed to the success of the programs they have managed. Their tremendous efforts gave IRRI an opportunity to reach out to the international community, enhance existing ties with the current stakeholders, and build up potentially productive partnerships in the future.

Workshop for Information and Knowledge Systems staff held at Los Baños


A workshop for the Information and Knowledge Systems (IKS) team was held on 11 October 2016 at the IRRI Staff House #1.

The objectives of the workshop include getting familiar with the IRRI Code of Conduct, building trust and having better communication amongst team members.

Mentoring program skills workshop held at HQ


IRRI kicked off its 2016 GROW Mentoring Program on 30 September at the institute’s headquarters. Mentors and mentees attended an orientation and skills workshop facilitated by Chris Dixon and Sue Baker of Growing Edge Hong Kong.

Defining leadership course held at HQ


The second batch of IRRI scientists attended Defining Leadership Course Module 3 – Leading Across Organizations on 27-29 September at IRRI headquarters. The objectives of module 3 include breaking down silos and working across boundaries within IRRI, influencing upwards, and delivering change and results.

IRRI medical clinic info session held

Forty-three employees attended the recently concluded IRRI Medical Clinic (IMC) Info Session held on 19 September at the Umali Building, Room A.

The new IMC service provider is headed by Rick Reyes, Business Unit manager of the San Pablo Colleges Medical Center. Mr. Reyes presented a brief introduction of the hospital and the services they provide. He also introduced the new clinic team members headed by Occupational Health (OH) specialists Drs. Catherine Canubas-Biscocho, MD, and Jason Factoriza, MD. Other members of the team are OH nurses Richmond Reyes, RN, and Kristine Dalisay, RN, and clinic nurses Caren Rubis, RN, and Rhona Sy, RN.

Dr. Canubas-Biscocho discussed the IMC service process flow on how IRRI staff can avail of the clinic services. Copies of the IMC service process flow were also distributed to all attendees for their reference.

The participating staff members actively took part in the question-and-answer portion of the presentation. Some of the questions raised were about the Annual Physical Examination, health talk articles, flu vaccines, etc.

Event participants were also encouraged to coordinate with HR and the clinic staff for any health-related topics they would like to be featured in the HR- Health Talk.

A clinic open house followed after the information session. 

Facilitated by the IRRI Medical Clinic, the info session was organized by the Human Resources-Work Relations & Advisory Services Office.

Presentation skills course held at HQ




Two sessions of a presentation skills course for IRRI’s Globally Recruited Staff (GRS) were held on 5-6 and 7-8 September at IRRI headquarters.

The course objectives include designing structured presentations to focus on outcomes, managing slides to deliver complex technical information, and developing high impact stories, analogies, and evidence to engage audiences.

The participants, 28 GRS from the Research Division, were welcomed by Director General Matthew Morrell. The sessions were facilitated by Jane Anderson, a personal branding and presentation skills expert.

Basic life support and first-aid training held at IRRI Bangladesh Office


The IRRI Bangladesh Office organized a training session on basic life support and first-aid for its staff on 4 September. The training was conducted by a team of medical experts headed by Dr. Ashish Nandi, consultant and coordinator, Accident and Emergency Department of the Apollo Hospital in Bangladesh.


A total of 27 staff members participated in the 3-hour training session on first-aid, basic treatment of wounds, and a practical session in using an Automated External Defibrillator).

DHRS Visits IRRI Myanmar Offices


During her visit to the IRRI Myanmar Offices in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw last 18-22 July, Christine Croombes, Director for Human Resource Services (DHRS), was briefed on the staff members’ work and listened to their comments and requests.

Whilst IRRI Myanmar does not have a Corporate Services Manager at the moment, Dr Jongsoo Shin, IRRI Representative for Myanmar, has agreed to manage the corporate services and the relevant staff. He will liaise with the DHRS, who will temporarily lead the Country and Regional Offices’ corporate services.

Team building of Zeigler Experiment Station team held at Los Baños


A two-part team building activity for the staff of the Zeigler Experiment Station (ZES) was held on 21 and 27 July at the Makiling Botanic Gardens, Los Baños, Laguna.

The objectives of the activity include kickstarting the newly-formed ZES Threshing team, and enabling staff to build mutual support to make ZES a reliable service provider at IRRI.

The team building was spearheaded by Dr. James Quilty, ZES Head, and facilitated by Human Resource Services.
