IRRI marks 2016 International Women’s Day with “Pledge for Parity”

 In 2010, IRRI began hosting the International Women's Day (IWD) as part of its on-going commitment to valuing diversity and inclusion, 

For this year, "Pledge for Parity" which is the 2016 global theme of the IWD was celebrated at HQ on March 8-9 together with the 1st Quarter Health and Wellness Fair program. The Human Resource Services – Work Relations & Advisory Services (HR-WRAS) office organized the event.

A special ribbon cutting ceremony was held to open the IWD Poster Exhibit which highlighted the five (5) IWD Pledges: Value women and men’s contributions equally; Help women and girls achieve their ambitions; Challenge conscious and unconscious bias; Call for gender-balanced leadership; and, Create inclusive, flexible cultures.
External Relations Director Corinta Guerta, and Human Resource Services Director Christine Croombes cut the ribbon at the opening of the exhibit, which will be on the display at Chandler Hall until 25th of March.
A Symposium and Open Forum followed after the exhibit opening which focused on the five (5) IWD pledges. In a special video message, IRRI Director General Matthew Morell delivered one of the IWD pledges  “Valuing women's and men’s contributions equally”, where he stated IRRI’s clear commitment to enhancing gender equity and the role of women in the institute. Human Resource Services Director Christine Croombes presented a talk on “Women and girls achieve their ambition”, while the rest of the invited speakers: Inez Slamet Loedin, Senior Scientist II-Genetics & Biotechnology unit; George Kotch, Head-Plant Breeding; and special guest, Ms. Esther Velasco, Team Leader - European Union – Europe External Action Services Instrument contributing to Peace and Stability (EU-EEAS IcSP-IBF) Gender Facility Project talk on the topics: “Create inclusive, flexible cultures”; “Call for gender-balanced leadership”; and, “Challenge conscious and un-conscious bias” respectively. The program was made available to the rest of the IRRI country offices via live streaming through the assistance of the IRRI Communication and Information Office.

Health seminar was held in the afternoon which was attended by staff, dependents and business partners. Medical Specialists from St. Lukes Medical Hospital, HealthServ Medical Center and Los Baños Medical Hospital discussed  topics on illnesses affecting men and women such as Diabetes, Cardiovascular Concerns and Cervical Cancer. 

On the 2nd day of the event, lecture and demonstration on First Aid for Kids & Adults, Basic Life Support for Adults, Aero Zumba, and Self Defense (Aikido) were presented by trainers from Pilipinas 911 Emergency Response Team, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Human Kinetics. Staff also visited the two (2) day bazaar featuring health products and free health screening from invited health and clinic providers.

IRRI Bangladesh Office Celebrates International Women’s Day 2016

IRRI Bangladesh Office (IBO), one of the largest among 15 IRRI country offices(with 11 female staff out of 87 total staff) celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) 2016 with the staff in its Dhaka office on 8 March 2016. The Corporate Services Team, IBO arranged a diverse and stimulating program that included motivational speeches from senior management and project members.

Dr. Paul Fox, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh in his speech pointed out the challenges for female in the agricultural sector, how IRRI is working towards gender parity and also shared with the audience examples of gender discrimination his mother and wife faced in their professional life. His speech was followed by project representatives from VDSA, STRASA, CSISA III, PPP, and RVC who highlighted their project’s initiatives and success in reaching toward greater gender parity.
During the session the video message from the IRRI Director General, Dr. Matthew Morell was played for the IBO staff.

 In wrapping up the first portion of the event, the IRRI Representative encouraged the female staff in IBO to aim for professional and personal growth, acknowledged their contribution and presented each with a small bouquet.

The second session was an informative session on Cervical Cancer conducted by Dr. Nasrin Zulfiqar, a medical representative from Apollo Hospital.  A total of 45 staff (female 8 & male 37) participated.

3rd Module of Preparing for Leadership Training for Post-Doctoral Fellows Batch 2 successfully held at HQ

The 3rd  module of Preparing for Leadership training for Post-Doctoral Fellows batch 2 was held on 01-03 March 2016 at the Headquarters. The program was facilitated by Chris Dixon and Lilian Wang of the Hongkong based training group Growing Edge.

Eight (8) Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) including Ambica Paliwal (SSD), Alexander Stuart (CESD), Feyisa Gudina (SSD), Hedia Tnani (PB), Millicent Sanciangco (GB), Nitika Sandhu (PB), Prasad Senadheera (PB), Toshishangba Chuba (PB), and one (1) Scientist I, Ando Mariot Radanielson (CESD)participated in the program. 

The Preparing for Leadership Course is part of IRRI's Leadership of Development Architecture for PDFs. It consists of three modules: 1) Leading Self, 2) Leading Teams, and, 3) Leading Across Organizations. The program is supported by the Director General
(DG) Matthew Morell, Principal Scientist Grant Singleton, Development Specialist II Noel Magor, and Director for Human Resource Services (HRS) Christine Croombes.

A welcome dinner party was also organized for PDFs on the first day of the program. They were joined by Interim Deputy Director General for Research Abdelbagi Ismail and Plant Breeding Head George Kotch.
