2016 Employee Wellness Program – Prioritizing your Health

The last part of the 2016 Q2 Employee Wellness Program was held on 22 June with several activities prepared for all IRRI staff.

Individual Counseling Session

Human Resource Services- Work Relations and Advisory Service (HR-WRAS) invited psychologist, Dr. Myrna Joyce Sanchez conducted individual counseling sessions with pre-registered staff at the HR-WRAS office.  Each counseling session lasted for 45 minutes which started from 8 until 11:45 AM.

Stress Management Seminar 


Dr. Sanchez also facilitated a Stress Management Seminar with the topic: Applying the Brakes before you Break from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Harrar Hall Seminar Room. The seminar focused on mindfulness based stress reduction. A total of 14 staff from the Crop and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD), Plant Breeding (PB), Genetics and Biotechnology (GB) and the Human Resource Services (HRS) departments participated in the seminar.

Blood Donation Activity































At the Safety Office Training Room, blood donation activity was also carried out from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. IRRI partnered with the Philippine National Red Cross - Sta Cruz, Rotary Club of West Bay and the Employee's Credit and Development Cooperative (ECDC) for this year's blood donation activity.

95 volunteers donated in the blood drive. Of the total volunteers, there were 32 female and 63 male participants from different units.

As shown in Figure 1, Plant Breeding (PB) ranked the highest blood donor with 18 donors,followed by Crop and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD) with 16 donors, while Safety and Security Services unit and Genetic Resource Center (GRC) had 12 donors each.

Overall, a total of 37,350 units of blood were collected, with each bag containing 450 cc. The collected units of blood will be used by the Philippine Red Cross to support the country’s national blood requirements.

The program partners were presented with Certificate of Recognition as IRRI’s way of recognizing their continued support to the blood donation program.

New Employees On-Board

Elizabeth Alcachupas  joined as Officer at the Crop and Environmental Sciences Division  (CESD) on 13 June 2016. 

Thura Kyaw joined as Assistant Scientist at the IRRI Myanmar office on 01 June 2016.

Than Htike joined as Assistant Scientist at the IRRI Myanmar office on 01 June 2016.

Ekta Joshi  joined as Assistant Scientist at the IRRI India office on 01 June 2016.

Paul Glindro  joined as Technician III at the Property and Transport Service (PTS) unit on 06 June 2016.

Staff Movements and Promotions

Noemi Cano  was promoted to Officer-Administrative Coordination at the office of the Deputy Director General Research (DDGR) on 06 June 2016. She can be reached at ext. 2928.

Planning your career seminar successfully held at HQ




The Human Resource Services conducted Planning Your Career, a seminar on best practices and tips on writing effective and powerful resumes.  The seminar, held on 15 June at IRRI headquarters, was facilitated by Brian Hipolito of the HR-Staffing Services unit.

Taking charge of your finances seminar held at HQ


The Human Resource Services holds a financial wellness seminar, Taking Charge of Your finances, on 8 June 2016 at Umali Building Rooms B and C. Invited partners from local banks and insurance companies talked on how to develop good money behavior in the morning session. Representatives from government agencies such as the PAG-IBIG Fund and the Social Security Services gave tips on how to maximize government benefits in the afternoon session.

Defining Leadership Course successfully held at HQ


IRRI holds the Defining Leadership course for the second batch of participants on 30 May-01 June 2016 at Headquarters. The program was facilitated by Chris Dixon and Nicola Shearer of Growing Edge Hong Kong.

Fifteen Scientists based in Headquarters and Country Offices participated in the program including Alice Laborte (SSD), Amelia Henry (CESD), Digna Manzanilla (CESD), Georgina Vergara (PB), John Platten (PB), Mohammad Rafiqul Islam (PB), Parvesh Kumar Chandna (SSD), Ramil Mauleon (GB), Rosemary Murori (PB), Sheetal Sharma (CESD), Sudhir Yadav (CESD), Tri Deri Setiyono (SSD), Manzoor Dar (CESD), Prakashan Chellattan Veettill (SSD), and Yoichiro Kato (CESD).

Building on the success of the Preparing for Leadership program for the Post-Doctoral Fellows completed in March 2016, Defining Leadership is the second program to be implemented in IRRI’s Leadership Development Architecture. It consists of three modules: 1) Leading Self, 2) Leading Research Teams, and 3) Leading Research Business. Goal program completion is by end of 2016.

Managing transitions seminar pilot session held at HQ


The Human Resource Services holds the Managing Transitions seminar on 01 June 2016 at the Seminar Room, Harrar Hall. The topics discussed include individual and organizational changes, our coping mechanisms, and how we could support each other during times of transitions.

The pilot session participants were composed of the HR team members. They were also joined by Lina Torrizo (GB), Fernando Madriaga (PTS), and Ruth Ann Felismino (EVEO).

HR staff attend job design and evaluation workshop


It has been a very stimulating and informative week for the HR team as they attended the Job Design and Evaluation Workshop at the IRRI Guesthouse on  25- 27 May. 

The training, facilitated by the Birches Group, provided clarity in determining job levels based on criteria set by the human resource consultancy. The information would be helpful in recruiting new employees, evaluating performances, and workplace analyses in the IRRI system.
